    Designed for Grades 3-8

    Join Discovery Education, the LEGO Group, and Bat Conservation International on a virtual tour exploring the life of bats in the wild and in conservancies and zoos. Your students will discover the critical role bats play in protecting farmers’ crops from pests and what we can do to help bats thrive!
    Traversing America’s south from Texas to Florida, this Virtual Field Trip takes students on a journey to learn about a variety of bat species and the many ways they contribute to healthy ecosystems around the world. Students will also hear directly from conservationists and scientists in the field who work to protect these bats’ habitats.

    About the Program
    Discovery Education is helping to bring the LEGO Group’s Build the Change Learning through Play program to classrooms everywhere. Build the Change celebrates the power of play to boost learning and improve lives. Educators, students, and families can tackle sustainable solutions in their own communities through hands-on classroom resources and unique educational challenges that make it easy to incorporate play-with-purpose into daily life.

Discover Bats

Get ready to explore BCI’s new bat-themed curriculum for grades 4-8! With 17 exciting lessons, students will dive into the world of bats, learning about their biology, ecology, and vital role in ecosystems. Through interactive activities and hands-on projects, they’ll discover the importance of bats in pollination, pest control, and conservation. This curriculum sparks curiosity and fosters a love for wildlife, while promoting environmental stewardship and es disponible en español. This project is funded by IF/THEN®, an initiative of Lyda Hill Philanthropies.

Deep in the Heart Film: Mexican Free-Tailed Bats

The following video clip, narrated by Matthew McConaughey, connects students to Texas’s unique environments, inspiring conservation action. Created in partnership with Bat Conservation International, Regions of Texas: Great Plains and Gulf Coastal Plains, and Ecoregion of Texas: Edwards Plateau, these videos feature Bracken Cave near San Antonio, home to Mexican free-tailed bats found throughout Texas.

Each video includes four TEKS and NGSS-aligned lessons for K-12 teachers, with teacher instructions, student documents, and PowerPoint files available in both English and Spanish. The lessons align with the revised 2020/2021 Science TEKS, and also connect to Social Studies TEKS and Next Generation Science Standards.
